Each step of 0.3 is equivalent to a "stop". The "stop", in Anglo-Saxon language, is the equivalent of the "diaph" (diaphragm) in French. For each "stop", the quantity of light is divided by 2. A neutral density of 0.3 gives a reduction of 1 "stop", which means 2 times less light; a 0.6, a reduction of 2 "stops" i.e. 4 times less light, etc.
